Summary: What You Should Know About Web Hosting
Just because your webhost says they support all your requirements doesn’t mean they support them well. A $5 web hosting can sometimes be extremely expensive. Here are some pointers for picking out a good web host:
Specifications: When running a CMS, make sure the webhost supports the minimum requirement of the software. You can always find these specifications by visiting the respective CMS website. In addition, as technological innovations and developments continue, be particularly sure that the webhost supports the version of the software you are interested in, especially when that version is still new to the market. Many webhosts pitch their support for some software, but could be referring to older versions only.
Backup: Be sure that your webhost company delivers great backup. Many webhosting companies do backup but sometimes those backups are only available to the hosting provider. There may be cases when the server catches fire, gets flooded, or caught up in some catastrophic failure. These backups may not be available to you. If there are backups available to you, find out how often they are made and how long it takes to restore from backup. Ideally, a daily and weekly backup will be made. The daily backup is usually the previous day’s work while the weekly is made once a week – usually on Sunday – in case the daily backup fails. Finally be sure to ask how long it takes to restore from backup if required, some hosts can take days during which your site remains unavailable, which might can be difficult when your revenue depends on it.
Research: Utilize the inundation of information on the internet. Often a good place to start is the resource directory of the software you will be using for your development. Some directories go as far to specifically mentioning the web hosting that they have vetted to support the development software. Of course the list is not limited to those officially vetted by the directory, but can never go wrong with those.
